
How to take care of your wood utensils
Wooden utensils are cherished for their beauty, functionality, and the warmth they bring to the kitchen. With a little care, they can truly last a lifetime, becoming heirlooms that tell stories of countless meals shared. Here's a simple guide to keeping your wooden utensils in top condition.
Step 1: Gentle Cleaning is Key
Unlike their silicone or metal counterparts, wooden utensils don't do well with harsh dishwashers or prolonged soaking.
- Hand Wash Immediately: After each use, wash your wooden utensils by hand with warm water and a mild dish soap.
- Avoid Soaking: Never leave wooden utensils to soak in water. This can cause the wood to swell, crack, and warp.

Rinse and Dry Promptly: Rinse them thoroughly and dry them immediately with a clean cloth. Air drying completely is fine, but ensure they aren't left in a damp environment.
Step 2: Hydrate with Food-Grade Oil
Just like your skin, wood needs moisture to stay supple and prevent drying out and cracking. Oiling your wooden utensils regularly is crucial.
- Choose the Right Oil: Use a food-grade mineral oil, beeswax, or a specialized "wood butter" designed for cutting boards and utensils. Avoid vegetable oils like olive or canola, as they can go rancid over time.
- How to Oil: Apply a generous amount of oil to a clean, dry cloth and rub it all over the surface of the utensil.
- Let it Soak In: Allow the oil to penetrate the wood for at least a few hours, or ideally, overnight.
